Week 24

Week Twenty-Four: January 24 - 30, 2009
This week marks the final week of my second trimester!!! Wow, how times flies!!!

I know that it is too soon for a belly pic, but I am on an absolute high so I thought I would share...

I just got back from my 24 week doctors appointment and it went really well! I was finally able to meet with my new doctor in the OB clinic and I loved her! Thank you to Elaine for recommending her!

Appointment Info...

Appointment Date: January 28, 2008 at 1300

Doctor's Name: Commander Hiles

Belly Measurement: 25 centimeteres (according to Dr. Hiles that is right on target!)

Estimated Size of Baby Bodkin: Just over a pound and almost one foot long!!!

Notes:
I am pretty sure I told you guys a few weeks ago, but I decided to switch from Family Practice to the OB. Because there are so many pregnant women on base, the hospital places you in Family Practice unless you are considered a high-risk pregnancy. I am very grateful that I am not high-risk (knock on wood); however, I definitely wasn't satisfied in Family Practice. I was told by a friend that if I was unhappy that I could switch to the OB... so I did! My last appointment was in the OB, but I met with some other nurse.

This time I met with my new doctor and I will have her from now on! She was perfect! She walked in the room with a big smile on her face genuinely excited for Eric and I. She then continued to go over my chart with me and describe in detail each thing that she was going to be tracking at each appointment. She also filled in the parts of the chart that past doctors failed to complete. Then she measured my belly! Finally, she was the first doctor to actually do this! And when she checked the heartbeat she actually took the time to explain what we were hearing. She described that the galloping sounding heartbeat is when the ultrasound machine is directly over the heart, but that there are different sounds if you are over the placenta, umbilical cord, etc. She didn't seem like she was rushing through my appointment like other doctors did in past appointments. She seemed like she really cared. She then spent some time answering my questions. I truly look forward to seeing her at my next appointment! YAY!

In other belly news, I felt Baby Bodkin's hiccups for the first time this week, at least I am pretty sure that is what it was! I asked Dr. Hiles at my appointment and she said that it sounded like the hiccups. She even explained to me how the baby's lungs work and why they get the hiccups versus why we get them.. very interesting. I also felt the baby move in multiple spots this week. Usually when Baby Bodkin kicks I feel it in one spot, but this week I felt it in two locations simultaneously. I assume this just means that Baby Bodkin is getting bigger, but it was pretty cool.

And of course a few pics for the week!

Baby Development Notes:

Baby Bodkin is growing steadily, having gained about 4 ounces since last week. That puts the baby at just over a pound. Since Baby Bodkin is almost a foot long (picture an ear of corn) , he/she cuts a pretty lean figure at this point, but the body is filling out proportionally and will soon start to plump up. The brain is also growing quickly now, and the taste buds are continuing to develop. The lungs are developing "branches" of the respiratory "tree" as well as cells that produce surfactant, a substance that will help the air sacs inflate once he/she hits the outside world. The skin is still thin and translucent, but that will start to change soon.
